How a secular humanist comes to pursue Spirit
- Phase 1 - Radical Secularism. Provide the boy experience...
- Teach him very early to think things through. Then move from an integrated Bay Area community to 1960 Houston.
- Houston is big on "just believe" and "obey as I say."
- Boggle his mind with a despotic approach to freedom of religion in which ‘educators’ institute their ‘truths’ in the curriculum, assemblies, and lunch times.
- Force him to witness the loss of humanity as Houstonians “think through” things carefully: their institutions protecting their white skins from getting too close other colors. Separate schools. Separate restrooms. “White” and “colored” drinking fountains(!) Etcetera.
-
Phase 2 - Mind-body Research. Next let him...
- Discover the power of mind-body effects in graduate school.
- Learn about prominent researchers documenting mind-body healing that goes beyond material physiology.
- Clinical training to handle those deeply relaxed biofeedback clients who experience out-of-body travel.
- Stumble across medical cases of resuscitated ‘dead’ people who revive — not as Hollywood zombies, not as vegetables, but as healthy and productive citizens — sometimes with enhanced abilities and sensitivities.
- Sample Cosmic Consciousness (1901) by R.M. Bucke, M.D. - documenting varying degrees of transcendent experiences,
many of them outside of religious scriptures.
- Buddha
- Moses
- Jesus
- Saul of Tarsus
- Muhammed
- Dante
- William Shakespeare
- Dr. Bucke himself
- Several 19th Century women whom Bucke identified only by their initials
- Open a yogi’s autobiography and find spiritual development that appealed to both his heart and head — that said, “test these methods for yourself” rather than, “just believe.”
- Meet and study with extraordinary women and men who had, through decades of committed practice, reached the heights described by Dr. Bucke (above).
- Commit to following their examples and tap the “Undreamed-of possibilities” which Swiss Psychologist Carl Jung said could be found in yoga.
- Practice! Practice! Practice . . .
- Evaluate progress. Refuse be self-satisfied...
